3rd Annual Historic Racing Legends Beach/Road Course Parade (All Day)

3rd Annual Historic Racing Legends Beach/Road Course Parade
Racing's North Turn- February 15, 2014, 9 a.m.

Whether you choose to enter the Historic Racing Legends Beach/Road Course Parade or come as a spectator; you will make history yourself. Take a step back in time just for a moment, some sixty five years ago what the drivers must have felt. Imagine as they flew around the North and South Turn sand banks of Ponce Inlet. The exhilaration of speed, the thrill of the sea spray hitting the windshield, the sand coming through the open windows of their race car. Cars spinning out of control coming around the turns, while thousands of spectators stood an arm’s length away. It was a true sight to behold!

While we cannot race on the beach any longer, being able to parade the 4.1 miles course of what some consider the Holy Grail of racing and honor the legends is a thrill you cannot explain. Last year’s parade brought a crowd of 3,000 to 4,000 spectators. This year we expect the same if not more. NASCAR Hall of Fame Historian, Buz Mckim will conduct driver interviews and there will be an autograph session immediately following the parade inside Historic Racing’s North Turn.

Date: February 15, 2014

Location: Racing's North Turn,

4511 S. Atlantic Ave

Ponce Inlet, Florida 32127

Race Car Staging will start at 9:00 AM at Racing’s North Turn parking lot. Parade will begin at approximately 1:00 PM

Race Car Trailer parking will be located at Ponce Inlet Town Hall 4300 S. Atlantic Ave. Ponce Inlet.

Spectators should park at the Toronita parking lot at Atlantic Ave. Complimentary shuttle service will be provided to and from the Racing’s North Turn ramp and south turn beach ramps from 9 AM – 4:00 PM.

The event is sponsored by Volusia County, The Town of Ponce Inlet, and Racing’s North Turn. If you would like to participate in the parade, your car must be 1958 and older. The car either must have raced on the beach or is a replica of a beach race car.

Giant Ground Sloth at MOAS
Museum of Arts and Sciences- Ongoing Exhibit

MOAS welcomed back the historic Giant Ground Sloth to public viewing in May 2011. After being kept behind closed doors due to 2009 flooding, the sloth is again on display as part of the Museum's permanent collection. The impressive 13-foot tall skeleton of the Eremotherium laurilardi or Giant Ground Sloth was excavated in 1975, in an important Pleistocene fossil site called the Daytona Bone Bed. Dr. Gordon Edmund, Curator of Vertebrate Palenontology at Canada's Royal Ontario Museum, identified and reconstructed the sloth for MOAS.

Daytona Beach 1/2 Marathon (6:00 am - 10:00 am)

Daytona Beach 1/2 Marathon
February 16, 2014, 6 – 10 a.m.

The Daytona Beach Half Marathon’s 13.1-mile course is unlike any other race in the world, bringing runners from the World Center of Racing, to the World’s Most Famous Beach & back! Register here!
The Daytona Beach Half Marathon’s route, named one of the seven scenic half marathons in America by Active.com, features one of the most unique courses in the running world. With the legendary paveme and historic grandstands of the Daytona International Speedway serving as the backdrop, runners will start on pit road and run the first two miles around the storied tri-oval.

After exiting the track, runners will turn east on International Speedway Blvd. and dash past the Daytona International Speedway Track Tours Building. The course then continues east towards the Atlantic Ocean.

After crossing over the beautiful Halifax River & getting a first glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean, competitors will soon reach the World's Famous Beach at approximately the 7.2-mile mark. At that point, runners will catch a breathtaking view of the ocean at sunrise, with an approximate .2 mile stretch on the hard packed sands of Daytona Beach in front of Sun Splash Park, before turning around and beginning the trip back to the Speedway and the finish line. The return includes another trip over the Intracoastal Waterway, as well as a run past one of the nation’s oldest historically African-American colleges, Bethune-Cookman University.

At the 13-mile mark, runners will reenter Daytona International Speedway, and make a final sprint to the finish line. One of the best post-race parties around is then just a few steps away in the Sprint FANZONE with awards taking place in the adjacent Gatorade Victory Lane.

Race themed photo opportunities will be available on the course. In addition, live music will also be located at several points on the course to help keep you motivated to the finish!
